Gene boosts rice growth and yield in salty soil 26 Mar, 2018 A
team of scientists led by Jian-Zhong Lin and Xuan-Ming Liu of Hunan
University in Changsha, China recently identified a gene that
contributes to salt stress tolerance in rice. The gene, which they named
STRK1 (salt tolerance receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase 1), was
activated under salt stress conditions. http://www.labmanager.com/news/2018/03/gene-boosts-rice-growth-and-yield-in-salty-soil#.WrnImC5ubcc

climate change set to pose immediate and long-term threats, the 2018
Global Food Policy Report released by US-based International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI) has stressed on the urgent need to take
steps to adapt to climate change, which poses serious implications for

Plant, animal loss could be as damaging as climate change, UN reports say 27 Mar, 2018 Four
new United Nations scientific reports all make the same conclusions
about the health of life on our planet: plants, animals and clean water
are all vanishing far faster than they should. During a meeting on
Friday in Colombia, scientists presented their findings about the state
of plants and animals in the Americas, Europe and Central Asia, Africa
and the Asia-Pacific area. https://weather.com/science/environment/news/2018-03-26-animals-extinction-water-loss-climate-change-study
'Green' lakes could accelerate global warming, new research warns 26 Mar, 2018 The
biggest human influence on climate change and global warming is the
release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Fertilisers washing
into lakes could increase methane emissions, potentially undoing
progress in addressing climate change. Now research published in the
journal Limnology and Oceanography Letters is the first to show how the
size of lakes and the nutrients in their waters from fertilisers are
contributing to that influence. https://news.sky.com/story/green-lakes-could-accelerate-global-warming-new-research-warns-11304674

the complete depletion of their water supply amid an extreme drought,
officials in South Africa’s second most populous city have limited water

Droughts in Argentina and South Africa highlight economic importance of water 23 Mar, 2018 Argentina,
the world’s largest exporter of soymeal, is suffering its worst drought
in at least a decade. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, South
Africa has declared a national disaster as extreme drought ravages the
Western Cape region. Ongoing droughts taking place across the world
serve as potent reminders of what happens when a country’s water supply
is compromised. https://www.worldfinance.com/markets/droughts-in-argentina-and-south-africa-highlight-the-economic-importance-of-water

trio of researchers at the University of Manchester has found that
flash floods in the U.K. carried massive amounts of microplastics from
rivers and streams to the ocean. In their paper published in the journal
Nature Geoscience, Rachel Hurley, Jamie Woodward and James Rothwell
describe their study of microplastic levels in U.K. waterways and what
they believe their findings mean for the world's oceans. https://phys.org/news/2018-03-massive-amount-microplastics-rivers-sea.html [ Top ] FOOD SECURITY Zimbabwe's perennial grain deficit areas facing food crisis 1 Apr, 2018 The
Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) says crops that
survived the extended dry spells in December and January show evidence
of reduced yield potential in most areas despite widespread rains in
February and March in most parts of Zimbabwe. In its latest report on
Zimbabwe, FEWSNET says persistent rains are also causing leaching and
waterlogging in some parts of the country and limited access to
top-dressing fertilizers is resulting in nutrient deficiency among other
crops. https://www.voazimbabwe.com/a/crops-situation-dire-in-most-parts-of-zimbabwe/4326554.html
Worsening land degradation threatens food security: report 27 Mar, 2018 Washington: A
report has shown that worsening land degradation caused by human
activities, reaching “critical levels” in many parts of the world, is
undermining the well-being of two-fifths of humanity, driving species
extinctions and intensifying climate change. https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/297357-worsening-land-degradation-threatens-food-security-report

report highlights how India is staring at a deepening water crisis with
few steps being taken to ameliorate this bleak situation. It predicts
an intensified water crisis across the nation by 2050, with many parts

Studying water scarcity trends, helping communities adapt can ease migration pressures, says UN agency 20 Mar, 2018 Water
scarcity and poor access to safe water sources pose major challenges
for two-thirds of the world’s population, the United Nations food
security agency said Tuesday, warning that worsening shortages could
soon force people to leave their communities. Exploring this intricate
linkages in its new report, Water Stress and Human Migration, the UN
agency also found that full information on these dynamics is lacking for
India, Central Asia, the Middle East and central Sahel – areas expected
to be hit with above-average surface temperature increases and
worsening water scarcity in the next 30 years. https://news.un.org/en/story/2018/03/1005362
