Agriculture's chief scientist, withdrew himself from consideration, the
White House announced. Trump had picked Clovis for the position despite
him not having a background in science, and that lack of experience,
alongside a history of racially charged and homophobic comments, made
his nomination particularly controversial.

FAO pumps K50 billion into agriculture, nutrition

Food and Agriculture Organization has signed a Memorandum of Agreement
with Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture for two five-year projects aimed
at addressing food security and nutrition. According
to FAO Dy. Director General Daniel Guftafson, the agreement has been
signed to improve the performance of the agriculture sector and the
nutrition of the people in the country.

Climate change 'will create world's biggest refugee crisis'

of millions of people will be forced from their homes by climate change
in the next decade, creating the biggest refugee crisis the world has
ever seen, according to a new report. Senior US military and security
experts have told the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) study that
the number of climate refugees will dwarf those that have fled the
Syrian conflict, bringing huge challenges to Europe.

Drought in Somalia drives children from school

Two more drown in Penang floods, death toll rises to seven

more people have perished in Penang’s flood disaster, bringing the
latest death toll to seven. The figure rose after two bodies were found
in a house in Jalan Mata Kucing, Air Itam and in front of Stadium
Bandaraya. Almost the whole of Penang was hit by floods and scores of
trees were uprooted in a thunderstorm which began at 2pm on Saturday.

Chennai battered by 6 hours of rain, schools shut: India

Area under irrigation in Maharashtra will be doubled: India

water resources minister Nitin Gadkari said the area under irrigation
in Maharashtra would be increased from existing 18% to 40% by
undertaking concerted efforts. Gadkari said the project will have a

Agriculture
remains the mainstay of Malawi’s economy, contributing significantly to
employment, economic growth, export earnings, poverty reduction, food
security, and nutrition. It also plays a critical role in ensuring
sustainable use of natural resources. All of these pose a threat to food
security and nutrition in the face of a growing population, increased
land pressure, and climate change. In trying to address these challenges
in the past, Malawi has over-concentrated on maize self-sufficiency for
food and tobacco as a cash crop, at the expense of other agricultural
commodities, including livestock and fisheries. Moreover, the sector
remains predominantly subsistence-oriented. In response, the NAP seeks
to sustainably transform the sector from subsistence to a market
orientation in order to increase agricultural production, marketed
surpluses of commodities, and real incomes.
