African farmers to control a $1 trillion food market

The market that may be worth more than $1 trillion each year by 2030, will substitute imports with high-value food items from Africa. This
is one of the conclusions from the latest Africa Agriculture Status
Report (AASR), launched on Tuesday at this year’s African Green
Revolution Forum (AGRF) in Cote d’Ivoire. According to the report,
agriculture will be Africa’s revolution, with a focus on SMEs and
smallholder farmers, creating jobs and sustainable economic growth that
failed to materialize from mineral deposits and increased urbanisation.

80 Phalombe irrigation farmers get certified

in Phalombe were all smiles when Phalombe District Council through the
Department of Irrigation trained them in crucial aspects of irrigation

received their certificates after successfully acquiring knowledge on
scheme management, group dynamics, and scheme operation and maintenance.

No more water cuts in Nadi - WAF

Authority of Fiji has confirmed that there are no more water cuts in
Nadi which was caused by the high-level algae flowing into Nagado from
its source, the Vaturu Dam. They confirmed that they have improved the water treatment process by conducting aeration process at the Vaturu Dam.

Agriculture
remains the mainstay of Malawi’s economy, contributing significantly to
employment, economic growth, export earnings, poverty reduction, food
security, and nutrition. It also plays a critical role in ensuring
sustainable use of natural resources. All of these pose a threat to food
security and nutrition in the face of a growing population, increased
land pressure, and climate change. In trying to address these challenges
in the past, Malawi has over-concentrated on maize self-sufficiency for
food and tobacco as a cash crop, at the expense of other agricultural
commodities, including livestock and fisheries. Moreover, the sector
remains predominantly subsistence-oriented. In response, the NAP seeks
to sustainably transform the sector from subsistence to a market
orientation in order to increase agricultural production, marketed
surpluses of commodities, and real incomes.
