The African Development Bank, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have relaunched a platform to assist African agriculture ministers and other key stakeholders to promote strong growth in agricultural production and value addition in their countries. The partners launched the new Leadership for Agriculture (L4AG) Forum on 2nd September 2019, during the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF).

Access to fertiliser key to food security, says OCP Boss

Improved access to fertiliser has been identified as a major key to increasing food production. Country Manager, OCP Africa, Caleb Usoh, at the second edition of the Agribusiness Summit, in Abuja, said there is a need to boost food production to keep up with the rapid population growth of the country. He disclosed the need to reach self-sufficiency in fertiliser production, adding that to achieve the vision, OCP Africa will invest $1b in fertiliser production capacity.

A large number of farmers on Saturday blocked the Muktsar-Malout road at Rupana village here, demanding the release of more water into the Dabra minor for irrigation purposes. They said the Irrigation Department was releasing water into the Arniwala minor, which further provides water to the Dabra minor, but their fields were drying up due to the release of less water.

State water managers seek public input on regional water conservation plans

State water managers are seeking the public’s input on proposed regional water conservation goals that were rolled out last month. The regional goals replace the governor’s former statewide challenge to reduce water use by 25% by 2025. The new goals cover municipal and industrial water use, with includes residential, commercial and institutional water use, excluding agriculture, mining and power generation, according to a press release from the Utah Division of Water Resources.

Water–energy–food nexus
With a view to drawing attention to the interrelated nature of global resource systems, FAO is exploring how the water–energy–food nexus can support food security and sustainable agriculture worldwide. Population growth, rapid urbanization, changing diets and economic development are just some of the factors driving increased demand for water, energy and food. Agriculture is the largest consumer of the world's freshwater resources, and more than one-quarter of the energy used globally is expended on food production and supply. Feeding a global population expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050 will require a 60 percent increase in food production.
