Climate change: Polarstern icebreaker begins year-long Arctic drift

German Research Vessel Polarstern has found a location to begin its year-long drift in Arctic sea-ice. The ship, which will head the North Pole's biggest scientific expedition, will settle next to a thick ice floe on the Siberian side of the ocean basin.

Commonwealth targets climate change with regeneration projects

The Commonwealth on Friday launched an ideas-sharing network to tackle the effects of climate change through replicable regeneration projects. The 53-country bloc held a two-day brainstorming of indigenous groups, environmentalists, scientists and climate change experts at its headquarters in London.

Flash Drought? What Is That?

Essentially, a flash drought is a drought that develops rapidly (think a couple of weeks vs a month or two). Additionally, a flash drought usually develops differently than a conventional drought does. A flash drought is usually caused by abnormally high temperatures working in tandem with breezy conditions to cause the moisture in the ground to evaporate quickly.

Water and Sanitation Department sets aside R460mln for drought-stricken Eastern Cape

The Water and Sanitation Department has set aside R460 million for drought-stricken municipalities in the Eastern Cape. The drought situation in the province has reached critical proportions, with supply dams in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro based in Port Elizabeth, currently sitting at an alarming 37%.

Govt. to help farmers in removal of flood sludge from plantations

Speaking to presspersons after the inauguration of his office in the Deputy Commissioner’s office building, the Minister said the government was aware that many farmers could not remove the huge quantity of sludge from the plantations on their own. Hence, it was decided at the government level to help.

Optimal PV-based irrigation system for Mauritania

The research article 'Rehabilitation of Mauritanian oasis using an optimal photovoltaic based irrigation system' has been published. Results show that a photovoltaic power system with a capacity of 142.8 kWp is needed to power eight submersible pumps with a total power of 83.5 kW.

Primitive tribals build bridges, irrigation system in Abujhmad

A primitive tribe living in remote areas of Abujhmad, a 3905 sq km forest region extending from Bastar in Chhattisgarh to Gadchhiroli in Maharashtra, have built robust bridges over hilly streams and rivers and irrigation ‘canals’ using indigenous technology. Abujhmad, which has remained un-surveyed by the government of India till date, has total 237 villages.

Sindh govt seeks WB’s approval to restore Akram Canal

Association Fran'aise pour l'Etude des Irrigations et du Drainage (AFEID), is organizing a two-day Conference on “Water Savings in Irrigation” from 13-14 November 2019 at Montpellier, France.
