‘History Disappears’ as Dam Water Floods Ancient Turkish Town

Every day, hundreds of people gather on the edge of the Tigris River in southeast Turkey. They stand and watch as a 12,000-year-old town slowly disappears. Rising water levels from the Ilisu Dam are flooding the ancient town of Hasankeyf. Turkish government officials approved plans for the dam in 1997.

Mettur dam retains water above 100ft for 200 days

The Mettur dam has set a record by maintaining water level above 100ft mark for more than 200 days continuously for the the first time in three decades. “Water will be released for around 230 days in a year. Nearly 330 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) water is required for samba and kuruvai crops,” the PWD officer said.
