Despite coronavirus restrictions, Earth Hour has commenced across the world, starting from New Zealand, followed by Fiji and Australia, with lights switched off on famous buildings and regular homes to boost awareness of climate change. The initiative, started by environmental group the WWF in 2007, asks people, companies and local authorities to turn off lights for one hour from 8:30 p.m. local time in their town or city.

Thailand Faces Record Drought

Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought

The international community is developing policy measures and actions to help the people most vulnerable to drought to take early action to avoid loss of life, and the heavy and growing losses of livelihoods and damage to property and ecosystems following droughts. The Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought (IWG) was established in September 2019 during UNCCD COP14, and the first outcomes of this initiative could become effective as early as 2022.

A satellite imagery platform called Digital Earth Africa has previously focussed on land resources such as forests. But it will now aggregate data from remote-sensing technologies, which will allow scientists at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) to develop applications for detailed analysis on continent-wide water levels and supplies.

Flood-hit families struggle with virus

People left in turmoil by recent floods say they are now struggling to cope with the coronavirus crisis. Storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge triggered devastating floods in February, causing at least £150m of damage across Wales. Many affected now face lockdown in temporary accommodation, some are sleeping on sofas, while others said they felt "forgotten".
