FAO urges nations across world to support agroforestry
20 May2019
More robust policy support is needed to reap the benefits of growing trees near crops and livestock, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said at a recent agro-forestry summit in France. The approach is gaining interest due to its ability to sequester carbon and mitigate climate change and to broaden the social, economic and environmental sustainability of rural development, according to FAO

Study maps rise in non-CO2 emission from cropland based agriculture over 30 years
20 May, 2019
Fertiliser pricing policies– influencing farmers’ preference towards specific chemical combinations–need to be mapped to the officially prescribed nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potassium (K) ratio to curb excess non-carbon dioxide (non-CO2) emission from India’s cropland based agriculture, research has suggested.

Global sea level rise could be bigger than expected
20 May, 2019
Scientists believe that global sea levels could rise far more than predicted, due to accelerating melting in Greenland and Antarctica. The long-held view has been that the world's seas would rise by a maximum of just under a metre by 2100. This new study, based on expert opinions, projects that the real level may be around double that figure.

Plants have increased the process of photosynthesis to slow down climate change
19 May2019
As the planet gets warmer, plants are working to slow the effect of human-caused climate change, observed researchers. According to the study published in the Journal of Trends in Plant Science, terrestrial plants are currently absorbing more CO2 than it released into the atmosphere through the combination of fire, decomposition, plant respiration and human-related emissions.

Botswana declares drought year as it suffers its first major climate change crisis
20 May2019
Botswana has declared 2018/2019 a drought year as "unevenly distributed rains, dry spells, and heat waves resulted in crop failure and livestock condition deteriorating." Last year, a global sustainability report warned that in 2019 Botswana would suffer its first major climate change crisis with an unprecedented drought and water shortage.

Hunger hits Zimbabwean cities as drought drives food shortages
21 May, 2019
At least 37% of the urban populace require food aid in Zimbabwe and, unlike in the past, aid will also be distributed in towns and cities. According to Famine Early Warning Systems Network in May, levels of acute food shortages are up because of poor rainfalls experienced last year in November, which meant a delay in planting and subsequently harvesting normally done in April.

Climate Risks and Solutions: Adaptation Frameworks for Water Resources Planning, Development and Management in South Asia | Authors: Richard Davis and Rafik Hirji

This report assesses the suitability of the water and climate-related policy environment (existing policy, legislation, strategy and planning instruments) for adapting to the impacts of climate change in the water sector in South Asia. South Asia will be exposed to a variety of impacts as a result of climate change, ranging from increased frequency and intensity of extreme events—floods, droughts and storms—to longer-term changes in climate and hydrological parameters, such as earlier onset of monsoons, reductions in mean annual river flows, and rising sea levels affecting coastal aquifers and surface waters. Each country of South Asia is exposed to a different suite of climate change impacts: for example, Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable to flooding and sea-level rise, while Nepal and Bhutan face the issue of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). These impacts will have a major effect on the economies and social welfare of the countries in the region. The poor and disadvantaged are particularly vulnerable to climate shocks and are likely to be severely impacted by climate change.
