Nigeria to become world’s second largest rice importer in 2019: US agriculture agency

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said that Nigeria is
likely to become the world second largest rice importer in
2019. Revealing this in its latest Rice Outlook released, the US
agriculture agency, however, said China will emerge as the world’s
largest. The report read, “On an annual basis, consumption and residual
use is projected higher in 2018/19 in Angola, Benin, Burkina-Faso,
Cambodia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Kenya,
Madagascar, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

Climate change is making hurricanes even more destructive, research finds

Climate
change worsened the most destructive hurricanes of recent years,
including Katrina, Irma and Maria, by intensifying rainfall by as much
as 10%, new research has found. The research, published in the journal
Nature, used climate models to see how factors such as air and ocean
temperatures have influenced hurricanes.

Green Court directs states to help farmers prevent stubble burning: India

The
National Green Tribunal (NGT) said that Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and
Uttar Pradesh governments need to take urgent measures to assist farmers
to prevent crop residue burning in their states which spikes pollution
levels. The tribunal said that the crop residue burning causes air
pollution and industries should help the farmers by way of corporate
social responsibility. An NGT bench asked the state governments to
enforce the directions of the tribunal including providing machinery to
poor and marginal farmers.

Tree planting in UK 'must double to tackle climate change'

Tree
planting must double by 2020 as part of radical changes to land use in
the UK, according to the government’s advisers on climate change. New
forests would lock up carbon but also help to limit the more frequent
floods expected with global warming. The Committee on Climate Change
(CCC) said land currently used to produce food would need to be
converted to woodland, growing crops to produce energy and for new homes
to accommodate the growing population.

There
is some good news for New South Wales farmers struggling with drought —
the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is predicting a wet start to summer. In
its latest climate outlook, the BOM said it was expecting December to
be wetter than average. The BOM is predicting a 65 percent chance of
above average rainfall next month but it may not be received by all.

India's sugar output may fall 7.4% due to drought in key growing areas

is likely to produce 7.4 percent less sugar than forecast earlier as
mills are reporting a sharp drop in sugarcane yields due to a drought
and white grub infestations in key growing areas. The drop will reduce
exports from the world's second-biggest sugar producer and likely help
support global prices that have fallen 17 percent so far in 2018.

Lack of planning puts Jordan at greater risk from flooding

rains and flash floods in Jordan that killed 34 citizens, injured
hundreds and stranded thousands have shown the kingdom's infrastructure
to be unprepared for severe weather that experts say will become more
common. Officials deployed rescue teams, divers and helicopters to
rescue more than 1,000 people caught in the flash floods that claimed 13
lived last Friday, less than two weeks after sudden flooding killed 21
in the Dead Sea area.

80% drip irrigation aid for farmers: India

The
Gosikhurd National Irrigation Project will require around two more
years to maximise its irrigation potential of 2.47 lakh hectares in
Bhandara, Nagpur and Chandrapur districts of the Vidarbha region in
Maharashtra state. The state agriculture department will provide 80%
subsidy to farmers from Marathwada and Vidarbha to set up drip
irrigation on agriculture land. The department officials said that the
move will not only help in watering crops but also save crops like
cotton, soybean and grams grown mainly in these regions. (2.47 lakh =
247,000 hectares)

World Bank proposes $400m aid to develop water board

World Bank (WB) has proposed $400 million aid to the Karachi Water and
Sewerage Board for developing water and sewerage services in Karachi.
However, the Sindh government has approved in standard and determined to
go move forward with the arrangement. According to the sources, the
World Bank delegation provided detailed information to the minister
about projects for revamping recent lines that are in use by the water
and sewerage system of Karachi.

The study on ''Water Productivity Mapping of Major Indian Crops'' presents
for the first time, maps on the water productivity of ten major Indian
crops across cultivating districts and states. It builds on the
expectation that if key decisions regarding irrigation, cropping
patterns, input pricing, and incentive structures are predicated on
water productivity of crops, it would ensure that water in agriculture
is distributed more widely, water-use efficiency is enhanced, and Indian
agriculture becomes more sustainable and productive in the long run.
Thus, the study seeks to inform targeted policies and investment
interventions for meeting the twin objectives of "har khet ko pani"
(water to every field) and "more crop per drop." The report will
encourage policy makers to take note of and trigger an effective
response to the looming water crisis faced by the agriculture sector in
